Where are we now?
In the last 10 years, Australia has seen rapid growth in the Microalgae Industry. Increased collaboration in occurring between industry, government bodies and research institutes. Considerable focus and support has been driven by:
1. Deep Green Biotech Hub at UTS in NSW, with the Algae Business Summit, industry research and outreach.
2. Agrifutures Australia have classified microalgae as an emerging industry and are throwing their support behind research and the advancement of the industry.
3. Marine Bioproducts CRC are providing nationally coordinated research directly to industry.
4. CSIRO host the Australian National Alage Culture Collection, undertaking research and commercialisation support from Hobart.
With worldclass research already occurring in Australia, Microalgae Australia has a key role to play in the widespread commercialisation and industry adoption of that research.
Where do we want to be?
Microalgae Australia’s vision is that within five years the Industry moves from its current disparate and start-up style model to a collaborative, pre-competitive industry
development model.
As the peak body for those in the sector we plan to act as a facilitator and coordinator across the supply chain to create a relevant reputation and strategic relationships for industry commercialisation and sustainable expansion.
Australia is not too far behind leading global markets, and we have a unique opportunity to learn from their growth and development to become globally competitive.
We are also open to creating a ‘Technology Showcase’ facility where best practice technologies, systems and research can be seen and understood, piloted and proven, to private and public sector organisations that can benefit from a microalgae based solution.
